Greetings from the Deaconess Community of the ELCA/ELCIC! I want to share with you some information concerning the January Term course that is being offered by the Deaconess Community of the ELCA/ELCIC in partnership with Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota.

“Diaconal Ministry: History, Formation and Spirituality,” introduces students to the historical, theological, and social contexts in which the work of diaconal ministry has been expressed throughout the church’s history and asks how that history continues to impact the present. This course also explores a theology of spirituality based on the Lutheran confessional writings and provides an opportunity for the discussion and development of a baptismal discipline and vocational discernment, particularly as it pertains to the diaconal calling.

We would appreciate your cooperation in making this opportunity known to anyone who may be interested. In the past, students taking this course have come from both those in the Word and Service and Word and Sacrament tracks; they have called this a very valuable experience and some have gone so far as to suggest it should be a required course for all who are thinking about entering any form of ministry.

Synods found this course to be a wonderful opportunity and have recommended this course to candidates who are unsure how/if they are being called to public leadership. This course meets the diaconal course requirement for those in the Word and Service candidacy process.

The course is not limited to those who are currently enrolled in seminaries but can also be used as continuing education for those who are already in positions of ministry including synod staff, pastors, and candidacy committee members.

Of particular note is this: The Deaconess Community pays the tuition for all who take the course.

The onsite component of the January 2018 course will begin the afternoon of January 14th and end the afternoon of January 19th at Mount Olivet Conference and Retreat Center in Farmington, MN. There will be two online sessions prior to the onsite component.

Registration opens October 19; I wanted to get this opportunity into your hands as soon as possible so that you could start sharing it with inquirers, candidates, and those in your synod through your weekly or monthly newsletter. Please feel free to invite people to learn more about this wonderful opportunity on the Deaconess Community website.

Should you have any questions that you think I may be able to clarify, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email and/or phone number listed below.

In Christ’s service with you,
