December 17 and 18, 2017
December 18, Bishop Paul D. Erickson of the Greater Milwaukee Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Reverend Joe Ellwanger will speak at a prayer vigil for UN International Migrants Day at the I.C.E. office. (310 E Knapp St). The prayer vigil will be followed by a procession to the office of Senator Ron Johnson (517 E. Wisconsin Ave.), where postcards signed by area congregants will be delivered.
December 18 is the United Nations Migrants Day. This is a day that the world is asked to remember the millions of migrants and refugees. These people are fleeing desperate, life-threatening situations, physical intimidation and abuse, oppression, war, and famine.
The two specific programs in the US that Congress must maintain if we are to authentically live out our concern for migrants and refugees in the U.S. are the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and the TPS (Temporary Protective Status) programs.
In the evening, there will be a procession in the format of Las Posadas. Participants will walk the migrant journey with Mary and Joseph as they seek shelter before the birth of Jesus. They will meet at Faith/Santa Fe Lutheran Church at 6 p.m. (1000 S. Layton Blvd). The journey ends with a potluck supper at Ascension Lutheran Church (1236 S. Layton Blvd.) at 7 p.m.
