JOB DESCRIPTION

Mt Zion Lutheran Church is a congregation that is Joyfully Growing Disciples in Christ. As a community, we come together regularly and celebrate. We also respond gracefully to grief and harm. Music is a powerful element of our celebrations, bringing out joy to its fullest and helping us when we are journeying through grief and harm. We are seeking musicians who will help bring richness to our worship as we celebrate the resurrection and God’s grace.

Upon the departure of our Director of Music, we are looking for new musicians to fill in the roles the Director of Music served. Knowing musicians bring many different skillsets with them, we are open to these roles being filled in one of four possible configurations:

  • A single Director of Music covering all roles, including organist and choir director at our early service and organizer and leader of a contemporary band at our late service;
  • A Traditional Service Music Leader serving as organist, pianist, and choir director at our early service PLUS a

Contemporary Service Music Leader serving as organizer and leader of a band at our late service;

MUSIC AT MT ZION

8:30 A.M. TRADITIONAL SERVICE

Much of the music for our traditional worship service is Lutheran hymnody and liturgy. Our congregation needs a musician who can play piano and organ and can choose music that is inclusive of all present, being mindful of serving all ages, uplifting the many demographics in our congregation, and celebrating contributions to hymnody from other parts of the Christian world.

10:45 A.M. CONTEMPORARY SERVICE

Our contemporary worship service is praise music with some liturgical elements. Many people at this service value worshipping with the songs they can hear on the radio, yet enough people choose this service for its time rather than its musical style that there is also joy in hearing contemporary remixes of traditional hymnody. This service, too, contains people of all ages and demographics, including sometimes worshipping jointly with the Korean congregation that uses our chapel.

CHOIRS

We currently have two choirs, the Voices of Zion, our vocal choir, and the Festive Bells, our bell choir. They meet on Thursday evenings and perform primarily at the 8:30 a.m. traditional service.

ADDITIONAL ROLES

Beyond being the lead musician in our worship services, musicians are encouraged to help the congregation bring their own musical skills to God in service. This may include organizing cantors, soloists, ensembles, and other special music and recruiting people into the contemporary band. This may include accompanying dancers and other artists, as well aiding the Sunday school finding music for their classes.
