Director of Music Ministry (St. John’s, Jackson)

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Director of Music Ministry works with Pastor and Worship Committee in ministries related to worship and music,
developing, planning, leading, and supporting activities to enhance and deepen the worship experience. This is a part-time
position that could be filled by one or more individuals sharing responsibilities.

trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, they raised their voices in praise to the LORD and sang: ‘He is good; his love
endures forever.’.” (2 Chronicles 5:13)

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As Church musician:
● Provide organ/piano music for all Sunday and special services of the church such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent,
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.
● Accompany the Adult Choir at weekly rehearsal, if needed.
● Coordinate with the Pastor, Worship Committee, and Choir Director in the selection of music.
● Provide organ/piano music for weddings and funerals held at the church, consulting with wedding couples or families, if
requested. For these services the Musician will negotiate their own fee with the family or couple.
● Work with Pastor and Worship Committee to provide for proper maintenance of musical instruments owned by St.
John’s.
● Recruit, coordinate with, and schedule a “lead singer” for Sunday and special services.
As Director of all musical groups:
● Recruit, teach, develop, train, rehearse, schedule, and lead a variety of vocal and hand bell choirs for regular
participation in worship including special services throughout the Church year as determined by consultation with
musicians, Pastor, and Worship Committee.
● Provide an atmosphere of musical learning, growth, and mutual care.
● Facilitate scheduling and/or choosing music for groups or individuals.
● Teach new liturgy and hymns to the choir and the congregation.
● Responsible for upkeep of the music libraries – choral music and handbell music.
● Purchase all music and music supplies, limiting expenditures to the amount provided in the church budget.
● Coordinate with the Pastor and Worship Committee in developing short and long-range plans and annual budget
requirements.

 

Other position duties:
● Arrange for backup accompanist and musicians for vacation and absences with support from Worship Committee.
● Ensure music and hymn selections are supported by copyright. Assist church staff in maintaining licensure and

reporting use of copyrighted material.
● Communicate and work with the AV/Tech team to provide appropriate sound and visuals.
● Participate in regular staff meetings with the Worship Committee and other music staff.

 

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
● Knowledge of the instruments and keyboard ability sufficient to play hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments
at sight.
● Knowledge of basic music theory, including simple transpositions or harmonizing a melody.
● Proficiency in hymn playing on organ and keyboard.
● Ability to play a variety of music with accuracy and rhythm.
● Knowledge and experience in directing vocal and handbell choirs or willingness to learn.
● Knowledge of appropriate church music (classical, contemporary, folk, and gospel) and the role of music in Lutheran
worship, matching appropriate music with the themes of the Church Year.
● Ability to work well with others.

 

DETAILS OF POSITION
● This is a part-time position that could be filled by one or more individuals sharing responsibilities. Salary commensurate
with position in part or in whole.
● The Church Musician will provide music for up to two services per weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
