Rev. Tyler Sit has had the immense pleasure of being the church planter of New City Church, a church led mostly by queer people of color. He is a lover of Minnesota, a United Methodist pastor, and the son of a Chinese immigrant. Tyler earned a BS in Communication Studies from Boston University and a Masters of Divinity from Candler School of Theology, and he has lived in four continents. He has formal training as a prison chaplain, community organizer, and social entrepreneur. When he is not at New City, you’ll find Tyler wandering around the Mississippi River. Tyler is the author of Staying Awake: The Gospel for Changemakers. Learn more at tylersit.com

Session 1 How to Stay Awake Tyler Sit, author of Staying Awake: The Gospel for Changemakers, explores how he pastored in south Minneapolis during the George Floyd Uprisings. Sit planted New City Church, a multiethnic, LGBTQ+ affirming (and financially self-sustaining!) community. Whether you are part of a new church or a well-established church, the discipline of “staying awake” and creating community-responsive ministries is more important than ever.

Session 2 How to Compost Zombies If you’ve worked in a church, chances are you have seen ‘zombie’ committees, programs, or even worship services. You know the ones—passionless spaces that gather out of obligation or ‘because we’ve always done it that way.’ These small gatherings syphon attention and resources away from innovation, leaving the church frustrated and exhausted. How do we create the conditions of life again? How do we compost the zombies? Come to this session to get ideas!

Session 3 How to Redesign Church From brainstorms that don’t capsize to creating music that captivates, the role of design thinking is critical to the future of the church. Learn practical skills to lead an adaptive, nimble, and thriving community. End the tyranny of stagnation with whiteboards, post-its, and innovation that results in real change.
