Prayer Service to Commemorate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation
October 31 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Please join us for a Joint Catholic-Lutheran Service of Common Prayer, “From Conflict to Communion: Together in Hope,” commemorating the Reformation and celebrating 50 years of Lutheran Catholic dialogue.
We’ll “lift the roof” with a 100 voice adult choir, children’s choir, and other choirs, musicians and speakers representing the diversity of our community. Our service is derived from the prayer service done in Lund/Malmo Sweden last October 31, led by Pope Francis and the leaders of Lutheran World Federation and attended by about 10,000 people from around the world.
This historic event marks the first Reformation centennial anniversary that Lutherans and Catholics have celebrated together.
Following confession and reconciliation we will share the peace, be fed by the Word, jointly confess our faith and make five commitments for our life together in the future. The service will end with participants writing and posting their commitments to “witness together to the mercy of God in proclamation and service to the world.”
All Wisconsin Roman Catholic and ELCA bishops will be present at Ascension Lutheran Church for this historic gathering. Everyone in the Greater Milwaukee Synod is invited.
Reception to follow.
We still need volunteers to help with the service. Most needed are adult choir members. Being a part of this choir will require two rehearsals, the first date yet to be determined and the second on October 30, beginning at 6:30 p.m. We also need five congregations to bring Reformation banners and stands and be willing to carry the banner in the opening procession. If you are available for either of these opportunities, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
