SUMMARY:Inspired for Mission Zoom Gathering: "Remembering Why Church Matters"
DESCRIPTION:Inspired for Mission Zoom Gathering: “Remembering Why Church Matters”\n May 28\, 2024\n @\n6:30 pm\n –\n7:30 pm\nCDT \nJoin our synod’s Mission Table for “Inspired for Mission\,” a monthly virtual gatherings centered around inspiring stories of where God is leading our Church! \nOur topic for May is “Remembering Why Church Matters.” We will be discussing as a group the recent article from The Atlantic entitled\, “The True Cost of the Churchgoing Bust.” This article\, written by a self-professed “agnostic\,” will open up a rich conversation and remind us again why God has planted our churches where we are: To make sure more people have access to the life-changing love of Christ\, in community. \n Here’s a snippet of the article: “Digital life [can be] disembodied\, asynchronous\, shallow and solitary [while]…religious ritual is typically embodied\, synchronous\, deep and collective.” NOTE: This article is only available on The Atlantic’s website behind a pay wall\, so we will be reading it together at the start of the session. Come be inspired together with people from across the synod!\n \n Click Here to Join Us on Zoom!\n \nMeeting ID: 893 2318 1586 \nPasscode: 739865 \nHere’s how it works: We’ll start each Zoom gathering with an inspiring story about a topic related to the mission we share. Next\, we’ll break into small groups for about 15 minutes to talk about what we heard (clergy and lay participants will have separate breakout rooms). We’ll then re-gather in the large group to share highlights and questions from our discussions. \n \n Watch Recordings of Past Gatherings\n \n\n\n\n Questions? Contact Rev. Matthew Short at matt@milwaukeesynod.org.

They do not count towards your lay voting member limits. \nRetired rostered ministers who wish to attend as a voting member should contact the synod office prior to registering. \n  \nThe number of lay voting members your congregation elects depends on the number of baptized members reported on your 2022 congregational report form A. We encourage congregations to choose  voting members who will represent a range of age\, ethnicity\, and gender whenever possible. \n  \nAll congregations may elect at least two lay voting members to the Synod Assembly. \nCongregations having 750 to 1\,249 baptized members may elect a third lay voting member. Thereafter an additional lay voting member may be added for each additional 500 baptized members of the congregation (e.g. at 1\,250 members\, 1\,750 members\, etc.). \n  \nAll congregations may add one voting member to the number allotted if that additional member is a youth or young adult (30 or younger when elected). \n  \nUse our handy chart to see how many voting lay people your congregation can register for Synod Assembly. This page also includes some helpful FAQs about voting members. \n\n\n\n Registration\n \nRegistration will open in February. \n\n\n\n Retired Rostered Minister Voting Information\n \nIf you are a retired rostered minister and wish to be a voting member of synod assembly\, please contact Mary Romskog no later than March 31. We also encourage you to review the information below that was send to all retired rostered ministers. \n  \nIn accordance with the bylaw adopted at the 2022 assembly (this number is 15% of the 146 retired rostered ministers in the synod as of 12/31/23). For 2024 this number is 22. \n  \nRetired rostered ministers serving under contract in transitional ministries are automatically granted voting privileges (there are currently three people in this category)\, and others will need to register their desire to serve as a voting member. If you would like to serve as a voting member at the synod assembly\, please contact Mary Romskog in the synod office by March 31\, 2023. If there are more than 19 people who do so\, we will conduct a vote\, allowing you as the retired rostered ministers decide who will be the voting members. \n  \nRemember: all retired rostered ministers are welcome to register for the assembly\, at a reduced rate. Those not granted voting privileges are allowed to speak on all matters before the assembly\, but limiting the voting to 15% of the retired roster helps us maintain the required lay/rostered minister balance. \n\n\n\n Agenda\n \nA draft agenda will be available soon. \n\n\n\n Resources for Voting Members\n \nPlease check this page for updated information that will assist you as you prepare to attend Synod Assembly. \nHere are a few tips to get started: \n  \nMaterials and information will be shared directly with voting members at the email address you provided. SUMMARY:Inspired for Mission Zoom Gathering: "How Things Have Changed"
DESCRIPTION:Join our synod’s Mission Table for “Inspired for Mission\,” a monthly virtual gatherings centered around inspiring stories of where God is leading our Church! \nOur topic for April is “How Things Have Changed.” If you have noticed changes in worship attendance and church participation\, you are not alone! This month’s conversation is an opportunity to set aside blame and shame\, to learn how the changes we are experiencing are part of a broader societal shift\, and to listen for the Spirit calling us into new adventures in spiritual renewal. \n \n Click Here to Join Us on Zoom!\n \nMeeting ID: 861 8865 4540 \nPasscode: 563041 \nHere’s how it works: We’ll start each Zoom gathering with an inspiring story about a topic related to the mission we share. SUMMARY:Inspired for Mission Zoom Gathering: "Fresh Expressions"
DESCRIPTION:Join our synod’s Mission Table for “Inspired for Mission\,” a monthly virtual gatherings centered around inspiring stories of where God is leading our Church! \nNOTE: Our March event will take place on 3/19\, which is different from our usual timing of the 4th Tuesday of the month. At our March gathering\, Pr. Matthew Short (Assistant to the Bishop for Evangelical Mission) will host a conversation about the “Fresh Expressions” movement of mission renewal. Some leaders and congregations in our synod are experimenting with these resources\, and we are going to talk about what they are learning\, and what it looks like to create forms of Christian community out in daily life that primarily hold space for people who are not connected to our traditional church structures. Please share this with others who you know who might be wondering how to begin or continue this work in their own congregations!\n \n Click Here to Join Us on Zoom!\n \nMeeting ID: 816 6170 2452 \nPasscode: 326844 \nHere’s how it works: We’ll start each Zoom gathering with an inspiring story about a topic related to the mission we share. We will learn about the resources\, tools\, and materials ReconcilingWorks has available to support you and your faith community in what it means to be Reconciling in Christ. \n\n\n\n ELCA Statement on Civic Life and Faith (Dr. Anthony Bateza\, Associate Professor of Religion; Department Chair of Race\, Ethnic\, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Director of Race and Ethnic Studies – St. Olaf College)\n \nThe ELCA is developing a social statement on Civic Life and Faith\, the relationship of church and state and related matters\, as called for by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.Social statements are the ELCA’s primary documents to address significant social issues. They are intended to aid reflection and shape conscience and to set forth the ELCA’s teaching and policy on the major social issues and questions of contemporary life. The first draft of the proposed statement will be published in December\, and this workshop will allow participants to share comments and feedback as part of a formal hearing. These comments will shape the second draft\, which will be developed in the fall of 2024. \nPlease note: Hearings are public gatherings where participants share their specific affirmations or concerns about a draft statement. Participants are strongly encouraged to read the document before the workshop and to come prepared with questions and suggestions.  The document and more information is available here. \n\n\n\n Breaking Barriers: A Workshop on Implementing Authentic Diversity through Congregational Assessment (Authentic Diversity Strategic Planning Team)\n \nJoin us for a transformative workshop designed to guide congregations during their antiracism journey. Explore a powerful assessment tool that helps determine where your congregation is so they can plan where to go. This is the first step to equip congregations with the skills and understanding needed to begin initiating meaningful conversations and actions within their churches. This interactive session will provide hands-on experience in utilizing the assessment tool. You will also learn more about our Strategic Planning Taskforce\, the work done so far\, and where they hope to go. We invite you to take the first step towards building a more inclusive congregation. \n\n\n\n Storytelling and Mission Renewal (Rev. Matt Short\, Assistant to the Bishop for Evangelical Mission)\n \nJesus taught through stories. Faith is shared and strengthened through stories. In this session\, you will learn simple practices and tools you can take back to your congregation that will inspire you and reignite a sense of vitality and excitement about what God is doing in your church and why it matters for the world! \n\n\n\n How to Make a Communications Plan That Works for Your Congregation (Robyn Bayland\, Greater Milwaukee Synod Communications Manager)\n \nJoin GMS Communications Manager Robyn Bayland (she/her) for a crash course on how to get the word out while being good stewards of your congregation’s time\, talents\, and treasures. Participants will leave with practical tools to bring back to your congregation\, including a comms strategy planning exercise and a curated list of free/low-cost resources for troubleshooting and skill-building. All are welcome\, regardless of tech proficiency: the skills from this workshop are meant to apply to both digital and print communications. \n\n\n\n A Basic Understanding of Israel and Palestine for Lutherans (Rev. Lisa Bates-Froiland\, Redeemer\, Milwaukee and Churches for Middle East Peace)\n \nRev. Lisa Bates-Froiland and co-presenters from Wisconsin Christians for Justice in Palestine\, with information from our partner organization\, Churches for Middle East Peace (cmep.org)\, will provide a foundation for understanding the current war in Israel and Palestine. A historical timeline will be shared\, along with explanations of key terms you’ve been hearing in the news: the Occupation\, Zionism\, Settlers\, “From the River to the Sea\,” and more. Did you know there are 6 Palestinian Lutheran congregations comprised of 2000 members? \n\n\n\n Let’s Talk So We Can Hear (Rev. Debra Trakel)\n \nWe will explore how we talk to one another and how what we say\, and how we say it\, can get in the way of our ability to hear one another. We will talk about stopping harsh words\, and how to have hard conversations more productively. We will talk about how to guard our hearts from painful words and how to help guard one another’s. We will talk about what authentic listening looks like. \n\n\n\n How Churches Can Work Together: Collaborations\, Consolidations & Mergers (Rev. John Bischoff\, United\, Racine)\n \nPartnering in ministry is the future of the church. Consolidations\, mergers\, and collaborations are a few ways in which your congregations can continue providing ministry while also providing avenues for new ministry opportunities. Come and hear what it takes to successfully join congregations together and the benefits of partnering together. \n\n\n\n Ending well: Accompanying Loved Ones as They Near the End of Their Lives (Shantell Riley\, End of Life Doula\, Dignity with Departure)\n \nIf you had an opportunity to prepare and plan for your death\, what would that look like? Would you have your funeral home picked out? Or maybe you want to be cremated? What about the outfit or music?  Who would be the person you would want to speak for you when you can’t speak for yourself? What or who would like to be surrounded by on your death bed? What would you like to leave behind? In a world where we don’t talk about death (a softer term is end-of-life) openly. It has been a taboo or “hush-hush” topic. Like talking about it will cause you to die.  It has become an experience that takes place other than home\, like the hospital. I want to assist you emotionally\, mentally\, physically\, and spiritually with the navigation of situations related to end-of-life. Wanting to make the departure as significant as the arrival… \n\nThe work of welcome is a lifelong journey of setting and reaching milestones. In this session\, we will learn a handful of easy practices and some foundational principles that can help your congregation “behave its way into new thinking” and make new connections with new people. If you are looking for a rich conversation about how to build new ways of being the church together\, this is the session for you! \n\n\n\n Treasurer’s Workshop (Rev. Karen Pahl\, Greater Milwaukee Synod Treasurer and Pastor\, Christ the Servant\, Waukesha)\n \nEverything you ever wanted to know about synod financial information and being a great congregational treasurer! Let us help you with resources and information that will make your work easier. \n\n\n\n We All Belong (Rev. Marilyn Miller and Kathleen Schluter)\n \nMilwaukee Inner City Congregations Allied for Hope (MICAH) has launched the We All Belong Campaign. Join us for this introduction/discussion where we talk about – Protecting Democracy\, Rejecting “christian” nationalism\, and Building Beloved Community. Includes video presentations by Bishop Curry\, Episcopal Church\, and Bishop Eaton\, ELCA. This model can be used in your congregation. \n\n\n\n All-Ages Sunday School\, Worship and Service (Rev. Lynn Erickson\, Interim Pastor\, Mount Carmel\, Milwaukee)\n \nWant to try something new to strengthen relationships\, support parents and grandparents\, engage new volunteers and deepen faith? It’s not magic\, it’s all-ages Sunday School (and more)! Hands-on learning in mixed age groups adapted to your setting is an exciting way to strengthen Christian education and encourage intergenerational relationships. We will hear from congregations that have experimented with all-ages Sunday School\, worship\, and service. Try a few things together and take home a complete ready-to-adapt curriculum on the Body of Christ. \n\n\n\n Wild Church (Rev. Larry Harpster\, Interim Pastor\, All Saints\, Wales)\n \nCome talk with Pr. Larry Harpster\, a self-professed crazy nature lover and pastor.   Learn what he is finding inspiring in a new movement called “Wild Church.” Hear some stories about nature spirituality and the Celtic Church.  Take home some concrete ideas about how your congregation could begin holding small groups and outdoor gatherings that help you connect with the sacred in new ways.  You may even find new ways to connect with some people in your neighborhoods! Leave with inspiration and some simple action steps you could take back into your congregation. \n\n\n\n Spiritual Practices\, Meditation\, and Mindfulness (Rev. Jackie Cook\, Christ the King Delafield)\n \nDo you sometimes find it difficult to slow down to pray and to study? In this workshop\, participants learn about ways to deepen your spiritual practice repertoire. Activities may include praying in color\, finger prayer labyrinths\, breathing\, visualization and Ignatian contemplation\, and a loving kindness meditation.  \n\nAs we seek to deepen and expand the holy work of welcome\, inclusion\, and celebration of LGBTQIA+ people in the church and society\, we can find ourselves asking\, “What does LGBTQIA+ mean?” Together we will co-create a safe space to learn helpful skills and tools to support you and your ministry. The Let’s Talk About SOGIE training and “Lutheran Introduction to Sexual Orientation\, Gender Identity\, & Gender Expression” are complementary resources\, to be used side by side in your learning of language\, and ways to extend hospitality to our LGBTQIA+ siblings. The training is great for those who are hoping to support their faith community in ongoing education\, or for individuals who have an open heart and mind on learning more about God’s diversity of creation. \nOur morning preacher will help us explore the connections between our faith and our engagement in the issues facing us. \nJoin us for a transformative workshop designed to guide congregations during their antiracism journey. \nWe all know the church and the world are changing rapidly! SUMMARY:Fall Leadership Conference
DESCRIPTION:Making and Creating Spaces: The Power of Storytelling \nwith Dr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy\n \nLutherdale Bible Camp\nEarly bird pricing: $125 + lodging through August 31$145 + lodging beginning September 1 \nDeadline to register: Monday\, September 18 at 12pm noon \nABOUT THIS EVENT\n“Making and creating spaces: the power of storytelling” captures the two main concepts that will be explored in this training: the importance of making space for people from all backgrounds and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and included\, and the power of storytelling to facilitate both of these things. \n  \nStorytelling is a powerful tool that can be used to connect with people on a deep level. It can help us to share our experiences\, learn from each other\, and build relationships. When we tell our stories\, we are inviting others into our lives and giving them a glimpse of who we are. We are also giving them the opportunity to connect with us on a personal level. \n  \nStorytelling can be used to create spaces where people from all backgrounds can feel safe and accepted. We can use stories to share our experiences of different cultures\, religions\, and identities. We can also use stories to share our experiences of discrimination\, oppression\, and marginalization. When we share our stories with others\, we are creating a space where they can learn about our experiences and see the world from our perspective. We are also creating a space where they can feel seen\, heard\, and understood. \n  \nHebrews 10:23-25  says\, “And let us not neglect our meeting together\, as some people do\, but encourage one another\, especially now that the day of the Lord is near.” This passage reminds us that we need to make space for each other in our lives\, both physically and emotionally. We need to be intentional about creating opportunities to connect with people from all backgrounds\, and storytelling can be a powerful way to do this. \n  \nBy making and creating spaces where people from all backgrounds can feel safe\, accepted\, and included\, we can help to promote authentic inclusion in our churches and communities. Storytelling can be a powerful tool that can be used to facilitate this work. \n\n \nABOUT DR. KELLY SHERMAN-CONROY\nDr. Kelly Sherman-Conroy\, Mato Wašté Winyan or Good Bear Woman\, is a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She has a passion for social justice\, racial reparations\, healing\, and storytelling that has been felt across the globe. As the very first Native Woman Theologian with a P.hD. in the ELCA\, she’s passionately pursued her calling to challenge the traditional conventions of theology. Her work primarily focuses on systemic theology\, with a unique approach to Lakota Spirituality and how it can inform Christianity and instill healing. \n  \nShe’s not only a trailblazer in her field\, but her perspectives and insights have gained her recognition and admiration both nationally and internationally. Her incredible contributions to racial reparations and advocacy for marginalized communities have changed the minds and hearts of many. \n  \nKelly is a woman who walks alongside people of all cultures\, providing a ministry that delves into the intersections of identity\, personal narratives\, and faith. With over two decades of experience teaching and leading in ministry\, Kelly’s involvement in various organizations\, such as the Minnesota Council of Churches and the American Indian Alaska Native Lutheran Association\, highlights her passion for cultural activism. She keeps busy as an adjunct Professor\, the Director for MYLE- Multicultural Youth Leadership Event\, serving on the Board of Directors for the ELCA Youth Ministry Network and Minnesota Council of Churches\, and the Director of Public Ministry at Nativity Lutheran Church\, Minneapolis\, and Convenor of the Twin Cities Interfaith Movement Chaplains. Her commitment to diversity and inclusion is evident in all aspects of her life as she actively works towards creating a more inclusive world. \n  \nKelly’s ability to speak the truth in love from a Native perspective coupled with her humility and humor makes for a powerful reception of truth in the hearts of Nativesand non-Natives alike. \nRead Kelly Sherman-Conroy’s full bio. \nAGENDA\nMonday\, October 21:00 pm Welcome2:00 pm Making Space for Connection – Understand the difference between making space and creating spaces4:00 pm Free5:30 pm Dinner7:00 pm Worship and fellowshipTuesday\, October 38:00 am Breakfast9:00 am Creating Spaces for Grace – Understand the importance of creating spaces where people can experience grace.11:00 am Bishop’s time12:00 pm Lunch1:00 pm Free time3:30 pm Open Space Conversations5:30 pm Dinner7:00 pm Bonfire and Storytelling Wednesday\, October 48:00 am Breakfast9:00 am The Power of Storytelling – Understand the power of storytelling11:00 am Closing worship \nLODGING\nOur Fall Leadership Conference will offer several housing options during the registration process. SUMMARY:Equipping the Saints Capital and Stewardship Campaign Leader Training
DESCRIPTION:Capital needs . . . stewardship needs . . . Equipping the Saints mission appeal. . . . \n \nIs your congregation wondering and asking\, “How can we meet our congregation capital needs? With those needs\, how can we participate in the Equipping the Saints mission appeal? Is there a way to do it all?” \nCapital needs of congregations are real. The roof may be leaking. Or the boiler needs to be replaced. The building may need to be updated or be more welcoming. And stewardship needs are real. The pandemic had an impact on attendance and giving. Budget needs are greater than projected income. And in the midst of those challenges\, the congregation weighs participation in Equipping the Saints. \nFor help in sorting out these questions and strengthening congregation giving\, along with meeting capital needs and integrating a capital campaign with Equipping the Saints\, put the date of Tuesday\, May 9\, at 10:00 a.m. on your calendar. Invite one or two church leaders to join you. \nOur consultant Mike Ward will provide a leader training session that will focus specifically on integrating Equipping the Saints and capital or stewardship needs. You will receive a Congregation Manual with step-by-step guidance to conduct a successful fundraising campaign\, along with additional options for raising funds. \nRegister now\, or contact ETS Campaign Manager\, Joyce Caldwell\, with questions. \n\n \n  \n  \n \n Register Now

\n\n\nRegister Now
