SUMMARY:Synod-Wide Book Study: "My Grandmother's Hands" by Resmaa Menakem
DESCRIPTION:Synod-Wide Book Study:\n“My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem\nMondays\, May 5 – 19 and June 2 – 16 (no book study on Memorial Day)\n6-8pm on Zoom\nJoin us for a synod-wide book study and discussion of “My Grandmother’s Hands” by Resmaa Menakem\, facilitated by Rev. Afi Dobbins-Mays\, Assistant to the Bishop for Authentic Diversity & Leadership. The weight of oppression and racialized trauma is so heavy. Working with one another with grace and love\, we can unpack. We can heal. We can reclaim our joy! \n Please note that registration for this event closes on Friday\, May 9th at 4:00 pm. \n \n Register + Get the Zoom Link\n \n \n \nAbout the Book\n“In this groundbreaking book\, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of trauma and body-centered psychology. The body is where our instincts reside and where we fight\, flee\, or freeze\, and it endures the trauma inflicted by the ills that plague society. Menakem argues this destruction will continue until Americans learn to heal the generational anguish of white supremacy\, which is deeply embedded in all our bodies. Our collective agony doesn’t just affect African Americans. White Americans suffer their own secondary trauma as well. So do blue Americans—our police. \nMy Grandmother’s Hands is a call to action for all of us to recognize that racism is not only about the head\, but about the body\, and introduces an alternative view of what we can do to grow beyond our entrenched racialized divide.“ \n \n Paperback\n \n \n E-Book\n \n \n Audiobook\n \nFree copies of the book are available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Contact Pr. Afi Dobbins-Mays at afi@milwaukeesynod.org.
