“Equipping the Saints for the work of ministry; Building up the Body of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:12)
Equipping the Saints mission appeal is a bold plan to build and strengthen our life and work together in mission. Events surrounding us underline the need to step out with curiosity, courage, and compassion to collaborate in new, creative, and innovative ways to “follow Jesus, form communities, and love all.”
The 2019 Synod Assembly received a report from Rev. Mike Ward of GSB Fundraising on the feasibility of conducting a synod-wide mission appeal to support innovation, collaboration, and leadership within our Greater Milwaukee Synod. The Assembly voted to approve the development of a synod-wide mission appeal, seeking to raise up to $2.5 million dedicated to priorities articulated in a case statement that would be refined by fall of 2019 and approved by the Synod Council.
In fall 2019, the Synod Council approved a prospectus for a $2.3 million mission appeal of Equipping the Saints. The coronavirus pandemic hit as the Steering Team was about to begin the work of the appeal. Implementation of the appeal was paused, the prospectus was refined based on the events of 2020, and the Synod Council approved the revised prospectus in November 2020. The areas of focus of the appeal are:
- Innovation & Collaboration, which will include grants to congregations who reach out in new and life-giving ways and that strengthen partnerships through Outreach for Hope; and
- Leadership, with particular areas of investing in racial equity, campus ministry, and our rostered ministers.
The pandemic has meant a slower rollout of the appeal, but events of 2020 have reinforced the need for expanded innovation and creativity in ministry, for stronger collaboration and partnerships, and for deeper commitment and action for racial equity and justice. We invite you to read the prospectus and look forward to ways that you will be invited to participate over the next two years. We are confident that the generosity exists within the synod to allow us to meet our exciting goals as we are open to how the Spirit leads us into God’s future, together.
